US orders to shut down Russian consulate in San Francisco

The United States ordered today the closure of the Russian consulate in San Francisco as well as of a chancery annex in Washington D.C. and a consular annex in New York, the Associated Press reports.

The US authorities have set a Sept. 2 deadline.

The move is an answer, “in the spirit of parity invoked by the Russians,” to Russia’s recent order to reduce the number of US diplomats in Russia to 455. Thus by Sept.1, around 700 staff working for the US diplomatic mission to Russia will be dismissed.
