The encrypted underground: Weapons, drugs, and identities for sale on the Russian ‘Deep Web’

The so-called ‘Deep Web’ can help you solve a variety of ‘problems’ — from obtaining forged documents to buying an anti-tank missile system. The Russian government is no stranger to censoring the legal parts of the Internet (new “anti-terrorist” laws only amplify the crackdown), and it’s not hard to imagine a wave of Russian-speaking new arrivals to the Deep Web.

Daniil Turovsky of Meduza, an independent Russian online publication, talked with various people whose life and livelihoods are connected to the Russian Deep Web, and learned more about how this world works.
