Uber launches budget taxi service in Moscow

UberX, the budget version of US-based taxi-hailing service Uber, has arrived in Moscow.

Residents of the Russian capital can now travel in an UberX vehicle for just $0.15 per minute / per km, in addition to an initial $1.20 charge. This is significantly less than the $0.40 per minute charge + $5 initial charge to use Uber’s premium service, which has been operating in Moscow since November of last year.

However, the range of vehicles on offer, such as the Ford Focus, Ford Mondeo, Skoda Octavia, and Kia Rio, are somewhat less luxurious than the Premium fleet, which includes the Mercedes S Class, BMW 5-Series and Lexus LS Hybrid.

Uber users request a taxi using the company’s app, which also allows them to track their vehicle’s location. Payment is by credit card only, and the company takes 20% commission. Its main competitors in the Russian capital are Yandex.Taxi and GetTaxi.

The launch of the service in Moscow is part of Uber’s global expansion plan. It currently operates in 200 cities worldwide and creates “50,000 driver jobs per month”, according to a recent interview with CEO Travis Kalanick.
