Federal government to impose new obligations for mobile operator frequency allocation

Igor Shchegolev, the Russian minister of Communications and Mass Media, announced that future tenders for mobile frequencies will include stipulations obligating operators to deploy their networks in regions with low population density.

Such conditions are already a component of this spring’s tenders for GSM frequencies in 17 regions. “If this experience proves successful, we will extend it to tenders for other bandwidths,” said Shchegolev.
