Rocket Internet receives $200 million from Russian-American billionaire Len Blavatnik

Rocket Internet, the Samwer brothers’ famous Berlin incubator, has received a $200 million investment from Access Industries, a US based industrial holding owned by Russian-American billionaire Leonard Blavatnik. The news was reported earlier this week by Berlin-based tech blog VentureVillage.com, which cited unnamed industry sources.

The amount has placed Access Industries second behind Swedish investment company Kinnevik, VentureVillage.com notes. The latter spent a record €300 million on Rocket Internet and its portfolio companies in the last quarter alone.

Skolkovo to develop cooperation with China and Japan

Skolkovo, the state-sponsored innovation hub nearing completion outside of Moscow, is seeking to extend its cooperation with China. Opportunities for cooperation were discussed last week at the Sino-Russian Trade and Investment Forum by China’s Vice-Premier Li Keqiang and Viktor Vekselberg, President of the Skolkovo Foundation.

Various leading Russian and Chinese businessmen were also in attendence at the forum, including top managers of Lenovo and ZTE, two companies actively developing activities in Russia.

Skolkovo seeks more ties with US innovation

On the last week of March, a team from the Skolkovo Foundation came to Silicon Valley for the 8th annual Global Technology Symposium. The symposium has always had a bit of a Russia focus, and this year was no different, featuring a half-day of sessions exclusively on Russia.

Another highlight of this year’s event was the inaugural meeting of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission Innovation Working Group. The group was established at last year’s G8 summit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and U.S. President Barack Obama and is headed by Medevedev’s economic aide Arkady Dvorkovich and Robert Hormats, U.S. Undersecretary of State for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs.

Skolkovo: Global majors hired to shape ‘smart city’

The Skolkovo Foundation, which has been instrumental in pumping R&D funds into the Skolkovo innovation hub just outside Moscow since 2010, has contracted with an international consortium to create a comprehensive ‘smart city’ concept.

Under the terms of the 89.7 million ruble ($3 million) deal, the Russian software developer Cognitive Technologies, Britain’s Ernst&Young, the U.S.’ Cisco and Japan’s Panasonic, all companies chosen in February on a tender basis, are expected to sketch out a city management system by July.

Russia’s second fastest-growing regional innovation economy in 2011 according to business monitor RBC Daily, is stepping up efforts to assert itself as one of the country’s most business-friendly ecosystems.

Less than three years after the regional capital city of Kazan opened IT Park, reportedly eastern Europe’s biggest techno-park, plans are now being laid for a second park, this one to be launched in Tatarstan’s second largest city, Naberezhnye Chelny, on August 30, 2012.

Mine fleet management solution provider Vist Group eyes IPO

Vist Group, a major, twenty-year-old Russian developer of turn-key IT solutions for mine fleet and railroad management systems, is considering seeking capital market opportunities, according to Reuters. A resident of Skolkovo, the government-sponsored technology hub outside Moscow, Vist could thus become the first Skolkovo resident to orchestrate an IPO.

Vist has declined to make any public comments, but observers presume the company could be eyeing the Innovation and Investment Market, a special trading platform within Russia’s MICEX stock exchange that is focused on high tech companies. The timeframe for the possible IPO is subject to speculation.

Skolkovo’s influence extending to post Soviet countries

In a renewed round of innovation cooperation in the post-Soviet area, the Skolkovo Foundation, the Russian organization in charge of building a world-class technology hub near Moscow, is expected to start screening and funding technology start-ups from the neighboring CIS countries.

The CIS Economic Council will vest the Foundation next month with full powers to run a ten-year interstate collaboration program, the Armenian Mediamax news agency reported.
