Russian educational network Dnevnik.ru honored at UN contest

Dnevnik.ru, Russia’s first social educational network, was honored last week as one of the of the best e-learning and educational websites at the World Summit Award 2011.

A free, nationwide school network, Dnevnik.ru was established in 2007. The site currently serves 16,000 schools and over 3 million pupils, parents, teachers, and school administrators.

US investors to fund Russian startups through new accelerator in St. Petersburg

Just days after Texdrive, Russia’s first international startup accelerator, opened in Moscow, the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO) announced in late October the creation of its own startup accelerator in partnership with US venture fund RSV Venture Partners.

Operations will start early in 2012 at the university-hosted startup accelerator, ITMO’s Public Relations manager Yury Shkolnikov told East-West Digital News.

Skolkovo

MIT and Skolkovo to develop joint research university in Moscow

A three-year collaboration program for the development of a graduate level research university was signed last week in Moscow by MIT President Susan Hockfield and Skolkovo Foundation President Viktor Vekselberg. The new institution will be located in Skolkovo, the state sponsored innovation hub under completion near Moscow.

The university, named Skolkovo Institute for Science and Technology, or SkTech, will open its doors next year for its first 20 students and is planned to consist of 15 research centers for 1,200 graduate, 300 postgraduate students and 200 faculty members by 2014. MIT Professor of Engineering Edward Crawley has been appointed president of the institute.

Sitronics increases its presence on the Indian market

Leading Russian microelectronic device maker Sitronics signed a commercial agreement earlier this week with Tech Mahindra, a major provider of solutions and services to the telecom industry. Tech Mahindra will promote the OSS/BSS-solutions of Sitronics India on the local market and may participate in the Russian company’s R&D programs, Sitronics announced.

Sitronics has also set up a competence center in India jointly with Shyam Teleservices, a local mobile operator working under the MTS brand, reported ComNews.ru, a Russian site specializing in telecom market news. Both companies are subsidiaries of Sistema, a diversified Russian conglomerate.

Russian-speaking MIT professor to head institute at Skolkovo

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) recently announced that it’s first president will be MIT professor Edward Crawley. In making the announcement, Viktor Vekselberg, president of the Skolkovo Foundation, said that the 56-year-old American scientist, who specializes in space exploration, was the “number one candidate.”

Crawley was selected for his knowledge of Russian, connections to Russian scientific world and talent as a manager, among other assets. According to colleagues, Crawley is one of the pioneers of commercializing science.

Microsoft and 1S to develop cloud projects with Rostelecom

Russia’s national telecom operator Rostelecom, US software giant Microsoft, and top Russian enterprise software publisher 1S signed agreements to jointly develop cloud computing projects.

Appointed in March by the Russian government to develop a national cloud computing platform by 2015, Rostelecom announced its intention to invest more than ten billion rubles (approximately $357 million) into the project.

US tablet may be granted a second life in Russian schools

Last week, Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Board of Rusnano, presented Russian PM Vladimir Putin with an e-reader prototype from Plastic Logic, a world leader in plastics electronics, reported news agency RIA Novosti. If current tests being held in some Russian schools are successful, the tablet could be used on a massive scale in the Russian educational system to replace printed textbooks. Continue reading
