Iridium + Thuraya

Satellite communications operators Iridium and Thuraya come back to Russia

Iridium Communications, the global satellite communications company, expects to commence operations soon in Russia, after technical tests are completed and acceptance certificate received from the Russian authorities.

“Our interconnect in Russia is built and 95 percent complete, and we’ll soon be pleased to announce our new start in Russia,” Corporate Communications Director Liz DeCastro told East-West Digital News.

Iridium’s predecessor company, Iridium LLC, already operated in Russia in the 1990s before ceasing business around the world due to a bankruptcy.

GLONASS mandated for Russian civil aviation by 2018

Rossiiskaya Gazeta, the official print media organ for the Russian government, has published a decision by the Russian Ministry of Transport last week to make GLONASS or GLONASS+GPS satellite navigation equipment standard for most civil airplanes and helicopters in Russia.

The measure is intended to boost safety and improve air traffic control, the ministry stated. It has a six-year implementation horizon, covering new aircraft of Russian make with airworthiness certificates issued after December 31, 2011, as well as foreign aircraft.

According to Vedomosti, a decision on whether the platform can use frequencies on the Horizons 2 satellite, which is owned by Intelsat, has been postponed until a meeting of the General Radio Frequency Centre (GFRC), called at the initiative of the initiative of the Russian Space Agency (Roskosmos).

GLONASS supported smartphones fail to get traction on the Russian market

Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE has stopped producing smartphones that support both GLONASS and GPS, said Ding Haomin, ZTE’s representative in Russia, in an exchange with CNews.ru, an online publication covering the Russian telecom and IT markets.

Haomin explained the decision was motivated by “the absence of demand” for such devices.

Hazardous freight transportation to be controlled using GLONASS

M2M Telematics, the leading Russian vehicle telematics solution provider, announced last week it has developed a distant control and surveillance system for hazardous freight transportation using GLONASS, the Russian satellite navigation system.

The hazardous transportation solution, which had been ordered by the Federal Transport Supervision Service (FTSS) of the Ministry of Transport, was developed in partnership with NIS GLONASS, the Russian national provider of satellite navigation services.

CTC Media, a leading Russian media company listed on the NASDAQ, announced last week an agreement with GlobeCast to broadcast the international Russian-language version of CTC, “CTC-International,” via GlobeCast’s Hot Bird 8 satellite.

A subsidiary of France Telecom, GlobeCast is a global provider of content management and worldwide transmission services for professional broadcast delivery. Hot Bird 8 currently covers both western and eastern Europe as well as a number of countries in North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Domestic sales of GPS+GLONASS road navigation devices could reach $3 billion by 2015, say Russian experts

As many as 270,000 GPS+GLONASS road navigation devices were sold in Russia last year, an almost three-fold increase from 2010, said Alexander Gurko, General Manager of NIS GLONASS, the Russian national provider of satellite navigation services, in an exchange with news agency RIA Novosti earlier this week.

These figures could double in 2012, representing sales of approximately 7.5 billion rubles, or $250 million. By 2015, the size of the domestic market could reach 100 billion rubles, roughly $3 billion, with one third of the units coming from Russian device makers, NIS GLONASS experts predict.
