Rusnano and Bright Capital invest in US next gen Wi-Fi chipset provider

Quantenna Communications, a leading player in ultra-reliable Wi-Fi video networking for whole-home entertainment, announced today that it has closed a $79 million funding round led by new lead investor Rusnano, the Russian nanotechnology giant, with participation by a second new investor, Bright Capital, a major Russian fund.

All existing major investors, Sequoia Capital, DAG Ventures, Grazia Equity, Sigma Partners, Southern Cross Venture Partners and Venrock Associates have also participated in the financing. Rusnano will invest up to $40 million and Sequoia Capital Growth Fund will contribute $20 million.

Capptain

French mobile analytics startup nabs $1.5 million from Moscow based venture fund

Runa Capital, a Moscow-based fund that began investing outside Russia last fall, is providing $1.5 million in funding to Capptain, a French startup that has developed a SaaS platform for mobile analytics and marketing.

Capptain’s valuation has not been disclosed, but Runa is a minority shareholder, Laurent Lathieyre, the startup’s co-founder, told East-West Digital News.

Scartel to switch from WiMAX to LTE in Moscow

Scartel, the leading Russian WiMAX operator, working under the Yota brand, will switch to an LTE network in Moscow as early as April 15, CEO Denis Sverdlov told journalists last week. Investment in the project will total $60 million.

The new network will make mobile Internet access cheaper and faster than  WiMAX, Sverdlov emphasized, as his company progressively switches to LTE its entire network, which covers many regions of the country. Scartel’s first LTE network launched commercially in mid January in Novosibirsk.

Yota to offer voice services countrywide

Scartel, the Russian WiMAX provider operating under the Yota brand, plans to offer voice services in the near future as a logical consequence of its switch to LTE. The company has just obtained a license for such services and another one to operate as an MVNO.

Scartel is in discussions with Megafon, a major mobile operator, for countrywide coverage beyond the Yota network. Conversely, under agreements announced in late 2011, Megafon will be able to use Scartel’s equipment for its own LTE services.

Yuri Milner invests in US realtime messenging startup Flotype

Russian billionaire Yuri Milner recently participated in a $1.4 million round of financing for Flotype, an American startup that offers realtime messaging technologies for cloud and mobile applications. Andreessen Horowitz, Ignition Partners, Salesforce and Y Combinator also took part in the deal, Techcrunch reported today.

Nokia integrates Mail.ru services in dedicated mobile web browser

Mail.ru Group and Nokia announced yesterday the launch of a special version of Nokia’s web browser for Nokia Series 40 mobile phones. These mid-tier feature phones, which inlude the Nokia 2700, X2-00, 5130, C3-00, 6700, 6303 and 21 other models, enjoy strong popularity in Russia, notes Telecom Daily, a Russian online publication covering telecom and IT issues.

The browser integrates the popular mail, social networking, and news aggregation services of Mail.ru Group. Among its strong points are a convenient interface optimized for small screens as well as a data compression technology that reduces data traffic and related expenses.

Russian geosocial service AlterGeo puts down roots in Ukraine

AlterGeo, a Russian startup inspired by the Foursquare concept, announced yesterday it has opened a representative office in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, where it already counts 60,000 registered users. The Moscow based company has also opened an office in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city, as well.

The Kiev office is the company’s first presence outside Russia, Altergeo VP of Sales & Business Development Evgeni Agronik told East-West Digital News, declining to comment, however, on further plans for international expansion.

Mobile traffic on Opera Software’s mobile browsers in Russia increased by 141.6% from September 2010 to September 2011, while the number of users in the country grew by 44%. These figures were disclosed yesterday in an exchange between Russian business daily RBC Daily and Lars Boilsen, CEO of the Norwegian company.

Foursquare

Foursquare launches versions in Russian and four other languages

US Foursquare announced yesterday it launched localized versions of its social geolocation service in Bahasa Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Thai. The new versions have been made available through the company’s iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry applications as well as through its web interface.

The Russian press also reported rumors that Foursquare is considering hiring a country manager for Russia.
