Yandex launches search tool for LHC events at CERN

Moscow – Yandex (YNDX), Russia’s leading search engine, has announced the launch of a search tool service for retrieving Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Events at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. A search tool custom-built by Yandex has been tested for one of four big particle detector experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest particle accelerator.

Yandex’s search service has been designed specifically for the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment (LHCb) studying the interactions of b-hadrons, heavy particles containing the bottom quark, also known as the beauty quark.

Yandex opens ad sales offices in Switzerland

In a new move demonstrating its international presence, the Russian search giant Yandex announced on Monday that it has opened a sales office in Lucerne, Switzerland. The new office is headed by Bernard Lukey, a Swiss citizen and the former CEO of Ozon.ru, one of Russia’s largest online stores.

The Lucerne sales office was opened to work more efficiently with advertising clients in Europe by presenting Yandex and its products to customers “and training them on how to maximize their advertising opportunities on Yandex,” the company’s press release reads.

Israeli startup TimeBooker receives funding from Yandex

Last week, Yandex announced it will provide seed funding to TimeBooker, an Israeli startup which intends to serve small and mid-sized service companies with an innovative booking solution.

The seed funding, which industry blogger Yakov Sadchikov thinks is “in the range between $50,000 and $100,000,” will be brought under the Yandex.Factory program.

Yandex to offer free cloud storage service

Russian search giant Yandex is developing a cloud service to store data from computers and mobile devices, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported on Monday.

The service, currently referred to by the working name ‘Yandex.Disk,’ will store and sync files of any type and format, from text documents, to video files and photos, as well as calendars and address books.

Twitter posts now available to Yandex users

In a new move to enhance social networking searches, yesterday Yandex announced it made a deal with Twitter to make available the full feed of all public tweets – a ‘firehose’ of data – to its users.

Twitter posts will be available to Yandex users almost instantly, covering users who tweet in Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian or Kazakh, as well as top feeds in any other language, according to Yandex.

Yandex social search function outpaces Google

Russian search giant Yandex introduced the beta version of a new search service yesterday, displaying search results from social network content in a more ordered and convenient way – and a step ahead of Google’s.

As before, Yandex’s search results display the public profiles of people with accounts on the country’s popular social networks, from Vkontakte.ru to Odnoklassniki.ru to Facebook, as well as to the blogging platform LiveJournal. But if multiple profiles exist for the same person, the new service groups them together in the search results. According to project manager Alexander Chubinskiy, “Yandex does this grouping with care – only those profiles that refer to one another get grouped.”

Yandex and Skype to support each other on the Russian market

Last week, Yandex, the Russian company that dominates the domestic search market, announced a partnership with Skype to promote their respective services among their users, news agency RIA Novosti reported. Users dowloading Skype software will be prompted to install a Yandex search bar add-on on their web browser and make Yandex their default search engine.

The Yandex Bar will include a Skype button that allows Skype users to replenish their account for paid services using ‘Yandex.Money’, the electronic currency of Yandex.

Yandex yields traffic leadership to Mail.ru

Mail.ru Group, the London Stock Exchange-listed Russian Internet group, marked a symbolic victory in its battle for leadership over the Russian Internet against search behemoth Yandex. At the end of last year and for the first time since 2008, the group’s portal and e-mail service Mail.ru overtook Yandex in terms of traffic for two successive months. According to TNS Russia, the search engine attracted 29.39 million unique users from Russia between the ages of 12 and 54 in November and 29.91 million in December, compared to 29.43 and 29.97 million for Mail.ru.
