Russian-speaking hackers lead global cybercrime

Group-IB, a leading Russian cybercrime investigation company, has just published its 2011 report on the “State and trends of the ‘Russian’ digital crime market.”

Russian-speaking hackers – both from Russia and abroad – generated more than one third of the global cybercrime value: they earned an estimated $4.5 billion out of a global “cybercrime market” which amounted to $12.5 billion in 2011. Cybercrime from Russia reached $2.3 billion, doubling from $1.2 billion in 2010, the report reveals.

Discount site client database leaked to crooks for $6,700

Baltinfo.ru, a St. Petersburg online portal, citing a police source, reported that earlier this year an employee of a popular discount site was caught red-handed trying to sell the company’s client database for 200,000 rubles (less than $6,700).

The sale of the USB flash drive, which contained sensitive client information, was arranged to occur at a popular restaurant in downtown Moscow. The police operation was conducted in early February but it then took authorities seven weeks to initiate prosecution.

Russia’s Roman Andreev wins first place and $5,000 in Facebook’s Hackers Cup

Facebook’s 2nd annual Hacker Cup competition, held at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, witnessed 25 of the world’s best hackers gather for an intense competition. Roman Andreev of Russia took top prize by correctly completing a problem in 1 hour and 4 minutes, one minute ahead of the second place winner. Andreev received an unusually-designed and heavy trophy made of cement, along with a check for $5,000.

The contest is an annual algorithmic programming contest that Facebook makes open to engineers from anywhere in the world.

Runa Capital invests in US website security startup StopTheHacker

SaaS website security services provider StopTheHacker announced earlier this week that it received $1.1 million in initial funding from public and private investors including Runa Capital, a Russian early-stage venture capital firm, and Brian NeSmith, former CEO of Bluecoat.

StopTheHacker’s proprietary, patent-pending technology helps solve web-scale security problems involving malware on websites, hacker attacks and other types of online abuse. It uses machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, based on years of research at the University of California, Riverside, and originally funded by the US National Science Foundation.

Report: Russia still a threat to global cyber-security, but less exposed to attacks

Russia is perceived as a threat to global cyber-security, says a report on worldwide technology safety released earlier this week by the Brussels-based Security & Defence Agenda (SDA). According to experts surveyed for “Cyber-security: The vexed question of global rules,” Russia remains “a thug state with great hackers.”

The report cites Vitaly Kamluk of the Internet security company Kaspersky Lab on past and present Russian trends: “Russia is known around the world for certain types of attacks, [among them] banking Trojans and spam-sending botnets. But we’re growing more and more like the rest of the world now.” Today, Kamluk adds, Russian citizens and organizations themselves come under attack by Russian hackers more and more often.

Microsoft accuses Russian engineer of creating Kelihos botnet

Earlier this week, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, made the findings of its Kelihos botnet investigation public, accusing Andrey Sabelnikov, a Russian engineer from St Petersburg, of having created the bot code and conducted the operation.

In the original complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in September, Microsoft alleged that Dominique Alexander Piatti and John Does, who owned a cz.cc domain, used it to register subdomains operating the Kelihos botnet. The charges against the original defendants were dismissed one month later in exchange for their cooperation, which led to identifying the creator of the malware.

On Thursday, October 1, a group of anonymous Russian citizens launched Rusleaks, a web site providing open access to a significant volume of personal and corporate data from a variety sources, including highly confidential ones such as the databases of Russian tax service and law enforcement agencies. The site was no more accessible today after the Russian authorities announced measures to block it.

Russian hacker stole $3.2 million from US organizations in 6 months

Tokyo-based cyber security firm TrendMicro revealed on Wednesday a major cyber theft of $3.2 million in six months starting in January 2011. The young hacker, nicknamed “Soldier”, resides in Russia, the firm believes. TrendMicro reported on this case in the company’s weblog this Wednesday.
