Global software, games and consumer electronics companies target Russia

Digital River, a US-based software company, has just released a survey of 250 companies across Asia, Europe, North America and emerging countries – including Brazil and India – which operate in the software, gaming software and consumer electronics sectors and generate annual global revenues of $250 million or more.

Russia came out on top of the list of countries where such companies are seeking to expand internationally in the next two years. Russia was named by 31% of the respondents, followed by Brazil (24%), China (23%), India (22%), Japan (22%), Germany (21%) and the United Kingdom (16%).

She was appointed CEO in 2011, a year that came as a tipping point for this major online retailer, with a $100 million round of financing in September and, by the year’s end, preparation for the acquisition of leading footwear retailer Sapato.ru.

Click-and-mortar concepts gain traction among Russian retailers

M.Video, a leading consumer electronics retailer, will open a network of outlets in Russian cities of less than 150,000 inhabitants, Telecom Daily reported last week. The limited-surface outlets will extend their restricted on-site assortment through POS electronic terminals that provide local customers with access to the retailer’s full catalog.

The first outlet of this type will open this summer, M.Video’s press service announced, with plans to deploy 35 similar sites across the country by the end of the year. The firm will invest some 35-40 million rubles ($1.2-$1.4 million) for each outlet, compared to 50 million rubles ($1.7 million) for a standard store.

Russian Post and Rostelecom judged “anti-brands of the year”

The Russian Post was among the ten companies awarded the title of “Anti-Brand of the year” by Potrebiteli.ru, a non governmental consumer rights initiative,  for the second time in two years.

“Judging from the endless flow of complaints, the Post’s work does not leave some things to be desired; it just leaves anything positive to be desired.  Parcels can take months to be delivered, if they are delivered at all, and many will have something missing inside,” the NGO complains.

Government hotline to combat consumer rights violations in online retail

The Public Chamber, a state organization which aims to organize and enhance the relationship between Russian citizens and government, plans to open a hotline next month to field consumer complaints about violations of consumer rights by e-commerce sites.

This initiative was announced by Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer who heads the Public Chamber’s commission on citizens’ security. “I received several complaints from customers who hadn’t received refunds in spite of the poor quality of the items they had bought online,” the Russian news agency quoted Kucherena as saying.

Yandex.Dengi

Yandex e-currency teams up with MasterCard to issue new payment card

The Russian search giant Yandex yesterday announced a new step toward integrating its electronic currency, Yandex.Dengi – which translates as Yandex.Money – with bank systems. Users of this virtual currency can now obtain a MasterCard debit card tied to their Yandex.Dengi account and make payments using funds from Yandex.Dengi.

The co-branded card can be used worldwide online and offline, wherever MasterCard is accepted. In addition, authenticated Yandex.Dengi users can withdraw cash from ATMs using a PIN code available upon request.

MallStreet.ru funded by Kima Ventures, Amber Venture Partners and Fabrice Grinda

Mallstreet.ru, a Russian online retailer founded in 2009, has secured an undisclosed  investment from West European early-stage venture funds, industry blogger Yakov Sadchikov reported last week.

Among the investors are Kima Ventures, founded by prominent French tech entrepreneurs Jérémie Berrebi and Xavier Niel, and Amsterdam-based Amber Venture Partners.

Discount site client database leaked to crooks for $6,700

Baltinfo.ru, a St. Petersburg online portal, citing a police source, reported that earlier this year an employee of a popular discount site was caught red-handed trying to sell the company’s client database for 200,000 rubles (less than $6,700).

The sale of the USB flash drive, which contained sensitive client information, was arranged to occur at a popular restaurant in downtown Moscow. The police operation was conducted in early February but it then took authorities seven weeks to initiate prosecution.

Biglion buys major Belorussian daily deal site

Just two months after it began serving Kazakhstan, Biglion, the leading Russian daily deal site, has acquired Bongo.by, a Belorussian analog. The transaction was announced yesterday by Biglion’s Development Director Oleg Savtsov in an exchange with Russian business daily Kommersant.

Savtsov did not disclose the amount of the deal, but Kommersant reported that Bongo.by is likely to have been valued at $1 milllion or less, citing unnamed experts.

Daily deal site Kupikupon.ru aquires beauty salon booking service

Kupikupon.ru, a major daily deal site, has acquired Moresalonov.ru, an online booking service for beauty salons, for an undisclosed amount, reported Unova, a Russian site dedicated to high tech and venture news.

The clients of Kupikupon.ru will be able to plan visits to beauty salons and book appointments  more easily. Bookings for restaurants, car maintenance, and medical service providers will also soon be included on Moresalonov.ru.
