Discount site client database leaked to crooks for $6,700

Baltinfo.ru, a St. Petersburg online portal, citing a police source, reported that earlier this year an employee of a popular discount site was caught red-handed trying to sell the company’s client database for 200,000 rubles (less than $6,700).

The sale of the USB flash drive, which contained sensitive client information, was arranged to occur at a popular restaurant in downtown Moscow. The police operation was conducted in early February but it then took authorities seven weeks to initiate prosecution.

Fast Lane Ventures has partnered with Bonial International Group, a German company specializing in location-based shopping information services, to launch Lokata.ru, the first service of this kind in Russia.

Lokata is an online and mobile service providing shoppers with the information needed to make smart shopping decisions prior to them even entering the store.  Users can identify stores nearby using search filters by product category, retailer and even brand.  Users can also view online catalogs, which carry all of products available by participating retailers. When a retailer discounts a product, desired by the user, Lokata alerts them.

Daily deal site Kupikupon.ru aquires beauty salon booking service

Kupikupon.ru, a major daily deal site, has acquired Moresalonov.ru, an online booking service for beauty salons, for an undisclosed amount, reported Unova, a Russian site dedicated to high tech and venture news.

The clients of Kupikupon.ru will be able to plan visits to beauty salons and book appointments  more easily. Bookings for restaurants, car maintenance, and medical service providers will also soon be included on Moresalonov.ru.

Travelmenu.ru, a Russian online travel startup specializing in package tours, took advantage of the Russian winter holiday season to increase its brand awareness using a bold parody of President Medvedev’s New Year’s greetings.

Released on December 19, the humorous video features the Russian President’s traditional greetings to the nation, revealing a behind-the-scene sea, sex and sun environment instead of the Kremlin view from where Medvedev’s address was officially supposed to have been broadcast.

Yandex implements real-time bidding technology

Moscow – Yandex (NASDAQ: YNDX) today announced that it has released a new advertising model, Real-Time Bidding (RTB), for testing by the public. The RTB technology gives advertisers an opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of the bid-based model now implemented by Yandex in display advertising.

Real-Time Bidding is an auction-based system for selling and buying ad impressions. Instead of advertisers directly bidding for impressions, the bidders are advertising systems fighting for the right to serve ads from their advertisers.

Yandex opens ad sales offices in Switzerland

In a new move demonstrating its international presence, the Russian search giant Yandex announced on Monday that it has opened a sales office in Lucerne, Switzerland. The new office is headed by Bernard Lukey, a Swiss citizen and the former CEO of Ozon.ru, one of Russia’s largest online stores.

The Lucerne sales office was opened to work more efficiently with advertising clients in Europe by presenting Yandex and its products to customers “and training them on how to maximize their advertising opportunities on Yandex,” the company’s press release reads.

Russian banks attract half a million fans on social networks

The popularity of banks on social networks – especially official corporate pages on Facebook or Vkontakte, and Twitter accounts – has increased more than 50-fold over the past year, says a report from Artenom Consulting.

“One third of the country’s 100 largest banks has either established an official presence on social networks or is using new communication channels such as ICQ or Skype,” the report reveals.

Online outran print on advertising revenues, up 56% in 2011

Online advertising spending surpassed print advertising for the first time in 2011, the Russian Association of Communication Agencies (AKAR) annnouced in its annual report, published this week.

According to the report, the Russian online advertising market reached $1.4 billion, up 56% from 2010, demonstrating the fastest growth among the different segments of the market. In 2010, online advertising spending had grown by 42%.

Ozon.ru back on social networks via Amazon cloud

Ozon.ru, a leading Russian online retailer, launched a new social commerce application on Facebook yesterday, making its entire catalog available through the social networking site, along with a number of integrative social and viral features. Users can let the app post status messages, notes, photos, and videos on their behalf or opt to keep their activity private.

Advanced filtering functions are also offered to make product search among Ozon’s 1.5 million items easier. After making selections, online shoppers need to go to the Ozon.ru website to finalize their purchase.
