GlobeCast Hot Bird 8 satellite to broadcast CTC-International

CTC Media, a leading Russian media company listed on the NASDAQ, announced last week an agreement with GlobeCast to broadcast the international Russian-language version of CTC, “CTC-International,” via GlobeCast’s Hot Bird 8 satellite.

A subsidiary of France Telecom, GlobeCast is a global provider of content management and worldwide transmission services for professional broadcast delivery. Hot Bird 8 currently covers both western and eastern Europe as well as a number of countries in North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Transtelecom to launch cable TV next spring

Fiber-optic telecommunication provider Transtelecom (TTK) is preparing to launch  cable TV services next spring in several Russian regions.

“We don’t focus on one technology exclusively,” news agency RIA Novosti quoted TTK President Artem Kudryavtsev as saying. “Depending on  the local situation in each region, we may use analog cable TV as well as the digital DVB-C standard and, in a later stage, IPTV.”

Eurosport inks Russian mobile TV deal

Eurosport has extended its partnership with MTS, a leading Russian mobile operator, thereby providing the latter’s mobile TV subscribers with access to Eurosport and Eurosport 2.

In a statement, MTS says it has one of the most developed 3G networks in Russia, covering around 80% of the population and that the number of users of its mobile TV service has increased seven times over the last six months.

Pay TV penetration to double to 73% in 2016

Pay-TV penetration in Russia will almost double from 40% this year to 73% at the end of 2016, said Pavel Basov, the general director of the country’s leading DTH platform Tricolor TV.

Speaking at Intercom 2011, a major industry event, Basov added that, by the end of 2016, cable and IPTV would account for 48% of the pay-TV market and satellite TV for 52%, the Russian press reported.

MegaFon revives OTT project

The Russian mobile operator MegaFon has revived an OTT TV project that had previously been frozen earlier this year. The news was given by Denis Nochevnov, the company’s director of new technologies and services, and quoted by AKTR and Digit.ru.

Work on the OTT project, which also involved the software company Netris, began in 2010 but was shelved this spring for unknown reasons. Industry sources believe that all three leading mobile operators will eventually be offering their subscribers OTT TV services.

Beeline

Beeline TV reaches 500,000 subscribers

The Russian IPTV platform Beeline TV, which is owned by leading mobile operator Vimpelcom, now has over 500,000 subscribers. Launched in Moscow in May 2009 and currently present in 34 large Russian cities, its take up has grown five-fold in less than a year.

Beeline TV has proved to be a driver for the company’s Internet Home service and now includes 23 HD channels in its offer, some in the basic package.

Continent TV looks to HD

The Russian DTH platform Continent TV is making a major push into HD, giving subscribers the opportunity to watch 10 channels in the format free of charge for a year.

According to the platform, it will broadcast the channels in test mode next month and in January, during which time they will be available to active subscribers of its Classic package.

Disney Channel for Russia

The Walt Disney Company and Russian media company YUTV Holding have signed an agreement to establish a national channel in Russia using the Disney brand. As part of the deal, Disney will acquire a 49% stake in the channel 7, owned by YUTV, which will then be rebranded as Disney Channel.

The latter will be available to around 75% of Russian viewers, or 40 million households, broadcasting via its own network of stations in 54 Russian cities including Moscow and St Petersburg.

MTS acquires pay TV and telephony service operator in Tatarstan

MTS, a leading Russian mobile operator, announced today it has acquired TVT, a leading provider of cable TV and fixed broadband services in the republic of Tatarstan. The purchase price amounted to $162.9 million, in addition to $17.1 million in net debt assumed by MTS.

“The acquisition allows MTS to strengthen its leadership position in Tatarstan and enter the market of pay-TV, broadband and fixed telephony services in the region,” the press-release reads.

NTV+

NTV+ seeks more subscribers

Russia’s longest established DTH platform NTV-Plus is to start offering reception equipment free of charge to some of its subscribers in order to increase take-up of the service.

According to Russian business daily Vedomosti, as part of a three-month offer starting in November, new customers who opt for pay-per-view channels will have the cost of purchasing and connecting reception equipment included in the fee.
