American neo-Nazi site finds no haven in Russia

Following last weekend’s violence by far-right groups Charlottesville, a number of technology companies are taking steps to boot neo-Nazis and other hate groups off their services. Among them are security service provider Cloudflare and Internet domain registrar GoDaddy, which abruptly stopped serving the American neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer.

The site sought a haven in Russia, but it was blocked by the Russian authorities less than one day after it registered of a .RU domain.

A few hours after the site went online, the domain registrar Ru-Center received a “recommendation” from Roskomnadzor, Russia’s telecom regulator, and unregistered The Daily Stormer.

Ru-Center originally registered the domain in an automatic process. As reported by online news site Meduza, Roskomnadzor “asked” the registrar to “consider the possibility of deregistering the domain due to the fact that the website disseminates extremist content.”

“The Daily Stormer propagates neo-Nazi ideology, incites racial, ethnic, and other forms of social unrest,” Roskomnadzor’s press secretary Vadim Ampelonsky was quoted by Meduza as saying.

“Russian legislation has established extremely strict measures against online extremism,” he justly remarked.
