After initial success in Russia, neural network-inspired apps Artisto and Prisma become international hits

Less than two months after launch, video editing mobile app Artisto has broken into the top 5 of the App Store and Google Play in the USA for the Photo & Video category.

Launched in early August by Russian Internet company Mail.ru Group and its US subsidiary My.com, the app — the first of its kind — allows users to edit short videos using a neural network-inspired technology. Videos are processed in the style of famous artworks or any other source image. Now 18 filters are offered to choose from.

In a mere three weeks starting from Sept. 18, the app has risen from number 1368 to number 2 in its category in the US AppStore (number 4 in Google Play) in only a little more than two weeks, as confirmed by AppAnnie data.

“Initially Artisto was an experiment. Neural networks are booming right now, and we were eager to explore their capabilities in the area of video processing, which no one else does at the moment. Artisto’s rocketing growth in the US stores, which, by the way is purely organic, shows that our product appeals to the audience not only in Russia, but all over the world,” stated Anna Artamonova, Vice-President of Mail.Ru Group, head of the Email and Portal business unit.

Meanwhile Prisma, a pioneering app that uses a neural network technology to edit pictures, is also gaining strong traction beyond Russian-speaking countries, where it had become a super hit during the summer.  The app reached first place in its category in India and Russia and 6th in the US, Prisma partner Aram Airapetyan told East-West Digital News.

Airapetyan claims no less than 70 million installs globally, including 17% in India, 13% in the USA and 7% in Russia.
