Russia to develop augmented reality technology for the military

Last month the Advanced Research Fund (FPI in Russian), a state-run organization which some compare to the DARPA in the USA, announced plans to develop a national augmented reality technology.

Several domestic tech companies responded to a call from the FPI and offered their action plans to implement this project. The project will be carried out in stages, each new one marking a gradual increment to augmented reality infrastructure and a new set of functionalities.

The project aims to meet the requirements of Russia’s import substitution strategy, said FPI top executive Sergey Garbuk.

The FPI was established in October 2012 to stimulate advanced and high-risk R&D programs for the Russian military and for economic purposes as well.
