Grishin Robotics invests in US 3D sensing hardware and software maker

3D sensor developer Occipital Inc. announced last week that it raised $13 million in Series B funding. Grishin Robotics, a fund launched in 2012 by Mail.ru group CEO Dmitry Grishin, participated in the round along with Intel Capital, Shea Ventures and existing investor Foundry Group.

In 2013, following a Kickstarter campaign, Occipital launched “the Structure Sensor,” a 3D sensor that scans objects and rooms in 3D. Occipital’s software developer kit (SDK) allows developers to build apps and games with 3D imagery and augmented reality using the Structure Sensor.

“Using Structure SDK, developing a state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction app is now no more difficult than developing a game,” the startup claims.

“Our hardware and software platform is being increasingly adopted in industries including medicine, architecture, visual effects, and 3D printing, and by industry leaders like 3D Systems, ILM, and many others,” said Jeff Powers, Occipital co-founder and CEO. “We’ve also recently started to show how our technology will impact virtual and augmented reality.”

“As computing devices with 3D sensing proliferate, the importance of this technology will rapidly grow,” believes Achin Bhowmik, vice president of Intel’s New Technology Group and general manager of its Perceptual Computing Group.

Occipital is based in San Francisco, California, and Boulder, Colorado.
