On the steps of Amazon: Russian data center Selectel launches “Virtual Private Cloud” storage service

Selectel, a major commercial data center operator in Russia, has just launched the “Virtual Private Cloud” (VPC) — an offer that it says is new in Russia but inspired by the models of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Rackspace.

“The VPC isn’t private in the traditional sense that it belongs to one client, but it’s not public either. We’re offering an isolated cloud infrastructure where a user can create virtual machines, connect to block devices, load virtual machine images, configure any network topology regardless of complexity, and execute a variety of other operations,” Selectel PR Director Alexander Vechersky explained to East West Digital News.

Thus the service aims to combine the cost advantage of a public cloud with the sophistication and customization capacity of a private service.

The service has been designed to handle complex corporate business applications such as enterprise management systems, CRM systems, accounting programs, and the like. “With the client-base and the sensitivity of their content in mind, the service ensures the highest level of security with configurable user access. To further promote security and organization, isolated environments can be created for a company’s different departments and functions,” Vechersky said.

The Selectel VPC is built on OpenStack, an open-source cloud platform, and managed using an open API, which facilitates integration with other applications. The physical infrastructure is located in the company’s data centers located in Russia, in compliance with the new Russian legislation regulating the storage and processing of personal data.

The Russian company said that its investments in the project amount to some 70 million rubles (approximately $1,4 million) till the end of 2015.
