McAfee: Russia is the main source of mobile malware

Cyber security company McAfee has released the report “Free apps, freedom, and free money,” which explores consumer mobile trends in June 2013. According to the research, Russia is seen as the most frequent source of mobile malware, while China is the main victim of the five most common threats.

The report also highlights that the most popular malware software platform in June was Android 4.0.x (Ice Cream Sandwich), while malicious apps fell mostly into the category of Personalization or Games.

The most serious mobile threats are related to SMS scams, such as sending texts to sometimes extremely expensive short numbers. This kind of malware is especially threatening in China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong.

Earlier this month, another security software company, Kaspersky Lab, identified Russia as one of the main phishing sources together with the US, the UK, Germany, and India.
