Russian children attracted by social networking, online shopping and pornography

Kaspersky Lab, a Russian IT security solution developer operating internationally, has released a report showing that 59.6% of the websites visited by Russian children are social networking sites, which is the highest percentage in the world. According to the data obtained from Kaspersky Lab’s “Parental Control” module, the second place in this rating goes to e-commerce websites, and the third to online resources containing pornography and erotic content.

Among other topics that attract children in Russia are pirated software, casual games, weapons, and even violence.

From a global perspective, Kaspersky Lab’s data shows that social networking sites record 1.4 million visits by young users every day, while sites with adult content get only 700,000 daily visits. The data was collected only from computers with Kaspersky Lab’s “Parental Control” module turned on, which let the researchers assume that they were used by children.

The young users tend to be most active on the Internet between 3pm and 6pm, when they are home from school, but their parents are still at work. However, another survey conducted by Kaspersky Lab shows that only about a third of parents worldwide are concerned about what their children are doing on the Internet when they are not around.
