Russian mobile app developers challenged to help stop human trafficking

NetHope, an association of international humanitarian organizations, USAID, and the Demi & Ashton Foundation (DNA) have called upon software developers from Russia and Eastern Europe to design innovative mobile applications to help stop human trafficking.

The contest aims to raise public awareness of human trafficking and deliver prevention messages to vulnerable populations and services to victims in the region. “An estimated 12.3 million people around the world are trapped in modern-day slavery, [including] forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation,” reminds NetHope.

Contest entrants have until mid-day Moscow time on August 8, 2011 to upload videos of their apps to the contest site. The top two winners will receive cash prizes of up to $15,000 and a trip to New York.

The winning application is expected to be promoted by an organization working to combat human trafficking in Russia.
