Harman’s car entertainment systems to be outsourced to Russia’s Luxoft

Luxoft announced that it has agreed with Harman International to design and develop sophisticated infotainment systems for the automotive industry.

Part of the Moscow-based IBS Group and traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Luxoft is a prominent offshore software developer with headquarters in Moscow.

Harman International is a global audio and infotainment group owning a number of high-end audio brands such as Harman Kardon, JBL, Mark Levinson, and Infinity.

The infotainment systems will be used in mid-range to high-end mass-market vehicles, a Luxoft representative told Russian news agency RIA Novosti. The systems will enable vehicle passengers, while on the road, to use conventional office applications, such as e-mail and word processors, as well as social networks and multimedia applications.

The first versions of the system are to be delivered to Harman in 2012 and will be available to consumers later, depending on the production plans of the auto makers.

Luxoft has dedicated more than 300 programmers, based mainly in its Ukraine development center, to work with Harman. Luxoft’s press release says the company has been developing a range of products for Harman for more than four years, products ranging from embedded real-time operating systems and navigation systems to in-vehicle Internet capabilities and technologies that integrate social networks.
