Government proposes to establish a single unified address database

The Ministry of Economic Development proposed last week to amend existing regulations to create a unified database of home, property, and business addresses throughout Russia. Currently, databases owned by state agencies at various levels often overlap and even contradict each other, making address verification difficult. The proposal aims to introduce a single standard for assigning addresses to all types of sites, including plots of land and construction sites.

The proposal requires municipalities to report any changes of street addresses and buildings within three days. The government would make the database available to the public on the Internet.

At present, the differences among various databases can lead to confusion and even serious problems, for example, if important legal documents go to the wrong address.
