Only 5% of Russian cardholders use banking cards for online purchases

According to the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM), a leading Russian poll institute, 40% of Russian citizens (46.2 million) hold one or more bank cards, but only 5% of them use their cards for online payments. Among active cardholders the number rises to 18%.

The most active cardholders – typically highly educated Muscovites with higher-than-average revenues – represent 7.6 million people, says FOM.

According to other studies, less than 20% of online purchases in Russia are made with bank cards. This figure, however, tends to grow year after year.
